Bongi Mbonambi is free to play in the Rugby World Cup final after World Rugby confirmed there is “insufficient evidence at this time to proceed with charges” after he was investigated for an alleged racial slur during the semi-final win over England baccarat
England flanker Tom Curry alleged that Mbonambi called him a “white c***” during the defeat in Paris on Saturday evening, as South Africa edged to a dramatic 16-15 victory baccarat
After 23 minutes at the Stade de France, Curry could be heard on the referee’s microphone alerting official Ben O’Keeffe to a comment possibly made by Mbonambi at a ruck baccarat
“Sir, if their hooker calls me a white c***, what do I do?” Curry inquired of O’Keeffe baccarat
“Nothing, please,” responded the official, before adding a few moments later, “I’ll be on it,” in what may have been an unrelated comment baccarat
The alleged incident itself could not be heard on the television broadcast baccarat
Following an investigation, World Rugby released a statement saying they won’t proceed with charges and that “the matter is deemed closed unless additional evidence comes to light”, which freed the path for Mbonambi to be selected as the Springboks’ starting hooker for Saturday evening’s clash with New Zealand baccarat
The statement said: “World Rugby has undertaken a review of allegations made by England’s Tom Curry in relation to the use of discriminatory language by South Africa’s Mbongeni Mbonambi during the England versus South Africa Rugby World Cup 2023 semi-final on Saturday, along with a further allegation brought forward in recent days about a previous match in the Autumn Nations Series 2022 baccarat
“Any allegation of discrimination is taken extremely seriously by World Rugby, warranting a thorough investigation baccarat
Having considered all the available evidence, including match footage, audio and evidence from both teams, the governing body has determined that there is insufficient evidence at this time to proceed with charges baccarat
Therefore, the matter is deemed closed unless additional evidence comes to light baccarat
“It is important to note that World Rugby accepts that Tom Curry made the allegations in good faith, and that there is no suggestion that the allegation was deliberately false or malicious baccarat
”Tom Curry made the allegation during England’s World Cup semi-final defeat (PA Wire)Curry had been the target of threats on social media after the allegations, with his club Sale Sharks saying they were “absolutely appalled” by the “nature and level” of abuse, while England captain Owen Farrell also slammed those sending the flanker abuse baccarat
Despite the threats, Curry has been selected in the England team to take on Argentina in the bronze final on Friday evening and World Rugby also addressed this aspect of the situation in their statement baccarat
They wrote: “World Rugby is also concerned by the social media abuse that both players have been subjected to this week baccarat
There is no place in rugby or society for discrimination, abuse or hate speech, and World Rugby urges fans to embrace the sport’s values of respect, integrity and solidarity baccarat
”South Africa captain Siya Kolisi confirmed that he had reached out to Curry and condemned the baccarat online abuse received baccarat
“If it’s a player, coach or referee, I don’t support that and I feel for him,” said Kolisi in the team announcement press conference baccarat
“I have spoken to him, I sent him a message when I saw that was going on because he’s somebody that I respect and I’ve played against for quite a while baccarat
“I’ve been through it too baccarat
We can take it as players when it comes to us directly but when it comes to your family, it’s totally different baccarat
That’s exactly what he said to me, it’s really hard when it comes to your family baccarat
That’s the one part of the game we really don’t enjoy – we don’t mind being criticised for how we play on the field but when it becomes personal baccarat

“We’ve experienced it too baccarat
Cobus [Reinach] and his family received death threats earlier this tournament baccarat
As a rugby family, as much as we compete, we do support each other when things like this happen baccarat
”Siya Kolisi confirmed he had reached out to Tom Curry (Getty Images)The RFU also released a statement following World Rugby’s confirmation that they wouldn’t press charges and said they were “deeply disappointed” by the decision baccarat
“The RFU fully support Tom Curry in raising the racially abusive behaviour he experienced whilst playing for England against South Africa,” said the statement baccarat
“During the match baccarat between England and South Africa on Saturday 21st October 2023, Tom Curry reported to the referee that he had been racially abused by Mbongeni Mbonambi baccarat
The subsequent World Rugby investigation was informed by Tom Curry that he had also been the victim of the same abuse, from the same player, in the Autumn Test 2022 baccarat
“World Rugby have today announced their decision not to bring charges in respect of either incident baccarat
The RFU are deeply disappointed by the decision taken by World Rugby baccarat
The decision not to put the evidence before an independent disciplinary panel has denied the disciplinary process the opportunity to hear Tom Curry’s voice and to independently assess his account of these serious events, together with the other available evidence baccarat
“In their continued full support of Tom, the RFU together with the England squad, condemn the disgusting abuse he and his family have received on social media as a result of his having had the courage to put unacceptable behaviour that has no place in society or on the rugby field, in the public eye baccarat

Ollie Bearman was barely three months old when Fernando Alonso won his first world championship in 2005 – but on his Formula One debut in Mexico City, the Essex 18-year-old finished ahead of the double world champion baccarat
“That was an added bonus,” he said with a broad smile baccarat
On Friday, Bearman made history by becoming the youngest British driver to step foot in an F1 machine at a Grand Prix weekend baccarat
And he quietly impressed, too baccarat
Competing for American outfit Haas, Bearman finished 15th in first practice, only 1 baccarat
6 seconds slower than triple world champion Max Verstappen, and three tenths adrift of Nico Hulkenberg – a veteran of 200 grands prix – in the other Haas baccarat
He was also speedier than Alonso baccarat
Five rookies were fielded at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, and Bearman was quickest of them all baccarat
Raised in Chelmsford, and schooled at King Edward VI Grammar, Bearman joined Ferrari’s driver academy, aged only 16 baccarat
Bearman had just won both the German and Italian Formula Four championships, and his performances made those at Maranello sit up and take note baccarat
He quit school – despite initial resistance from his mother, Terri – left the family home in Chelmsford, and moved to Modena, a dozen miles north of Ferrari’s headquarters in northern Italy baccarat
Two years on, and his Italian twang is noticeable baccarat
“Maybe I got a bit lucky not to get the Essex accent,” he joked, in an interview with the PA news agency baccarat
I miss my family, my two dogs - I have an English Bull Terrier and a Boston Terrier and they are very cute - and that is the negative side baccarat
But the food in Italy is a big chunk above the English stuff, and the weather is baccarat better, tooOllie Bearman“A lot of people have told me my accent has changed even if I don’t notice it baccarat
I spend a lot of time with Italians and to communicate with people where English is not their first language is not easy, so I have changed my word order and ended up with this everywhere accent baccarat
“When I moved to Modena it happened pretty quickly baccarat
It was like going to university two years early, but I have loved every moment so far baccarat
My mum was very pro-school and very pro-education, but we managed to convince her in the end baccarat

”Following four victories in his rookie Formula Two season – the feeder series to F1 – Bearman was thrust into the spotlight in Mexico City, eclipsing Lando Norris as the sport’s youngest Brit baccarat
Norris, now in his fifth season, was three months shy of his 19th birthday when he took part in practice for McLaren in Belgium in 2018 baccarat
Bearman turned 18 in May baccarat
When Lewis Hamilton made his F1 bow, Bearman was only 18 months old baccarat
Yet on Friday, he shared the same asphalt as the seven-time world champion baccarat
“When I heard Hamilton was coming up behind me on a push lap I was like ‘wow, I will get out of the way’,” he added baccarat
However, it was Hamilton’s former McLaren team-mate, the 2009 world champion Jenson Button, who was Bearman’s childhood hero baccarat
“I heard Jenson was praising me on Sky, and that was amazing for me to hear,” he adds baccarat
“I don’t know why, but he was always the guy I loved and really looked up to baccarat
It is cool that he recognised my performance in practice, and I will try to speak to him here – that is my goal baccarat
”Bearman will remain in F2 next season and he will be back in an F1 machine in practice for Haas – effectively Ferrari’s B team – next month in Abu Dhabi baccarat
“It is really cool that I have been given this opportunity,” he said baccarat
“My whole career has been a pinch-yourself moment, and this is another one baccarat
“Ferrari is such an elusive team baccarat
They are an iconic brand, they have an iconic colour and they have the best-looking car on the grid baccarat
They are putting a lot of trust in me, and loyalty is an important part of this paddock baccarat
“Of course my goal is to become a Ferrari driver, and I need to do that with my performances on track baccarat
Today was an amazing moment, and one I will savour for years to come baccarat
“It is a shame it was only practice, but it is all part and parcel of the work we have been doing to get to the top baccarat
