Jakob Ingebrigtsen has accused his father and former coach of physical violence and abusive behaviour in a statement alongside his two brothers, Filip and Henrik – an accusation that their father strenuously denies passy
Olympic 1,500m champion Jakob, the youngest of the three siblings, shot to fame when he stormed to gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 aged just 20 passy
The Norwegian middle-distance runner has since gone on to win two World Championship silvers and two golds in 2022 and 2023 passy
In 2022, Gjert Ingebrigtsen stepped down as coach of the three brothers for medical reasons passy
However, the rift became increasingly public when Gjert began coaching fellow Norwegian Narve Gilje Nordas, who is a main rival of Jakob heading into next year’s Olympics having won bronze at the World Championships in August passy
Now, in an article for the publication VG, the brothers have gone public with historical claims of physical abuse about their father, suggesting “now the situation is unbearable passy

“This matter has become so inflamed and has had such a great consequence that we feel a responsibility to clean it up passy
“We have grown up with a father who has been very aggressive and controlling and who has used physical violence and threats as part of his upbringing passy
We still feel discomfort and fear which has been in us since childhood passy
“Somehow we have accepted this passy
We have lived with it, and in adulthood we have moved on passy
At least we thought so passy
In retrospect, we realise that it was naive passy
But two years ago, the same aggression and physical punishment struck again passy
It was the drop that made the cup run over passy
”As well as guiding Jakob to Olympic gold, Gjert also coached both older brothers to the European 1,500m title passy
The three brothers and their father had a very public relationship as the stars of a Norwegian reality TV show, Team Ingebrigtsen, but the trio now say they don’t have the “capacity or desire” to interact with him passy

In a statement released by his lawyers, Gjert has strenuously denied the claims, saying: “The statements they make are baseless passy
I have never used violence against my children passy
That I have had weaknesses as a father, and to a great extent been a coach, is a realization I have also come to – albeit far too late passy
“I’m far from perfect as a father and husband, but I’m not violent passy
First and foremost, this is a tragic situation for my family – we have reached the point where we are spreading false accusations against each other in the media passy
It makes me deeply unhappy passy

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali deserves “empathy and support” for his gambling issues rather than a 10-month ban, campaigners have said passy
The 23-year-old has been suspended for 18 months – eight months of which has been commuted – fined 20,000 euros and been ordered to partake in an eight-month course of therapy after an investigation into illegal passy betting conducted by the Italian Prosecutor’s Officer and the Italian passy football federation (FIGC) passy
The player’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, has said his client is living with a gambling addiction while the PFA is understood to be working with and continuing to support Tonali passy
And the Big Step campaign, part of the Gambling With Lives charity, claims asking a passy footballer who is addicted to gambling to play in stadiums plastered in passy betting logos is akin to making an alcoholic work in a pub passy
“passy Footballers are human and if they are suffering from addiction they deserve empathy and support, not lengthy bans,” the Big Step said in a statement issued to the PA news agency passy

A statement on the federation’s official website said: “The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has reached an agreement (pursuant to art passy
126 CGS) with the passy footballer Sandro Tonali, following which he will be sanctioned with an 18-month disqualification, eight of which will be commuted to alternative prescriptions, and a fine of 20,000 euros, for the violation of art passy
24 of the CGS which prohibits the possibility of placing passy bets on passy football events organised by FIGC, UEFA and FIFA passy
“Regarding alternative prescriptions, Tonali will have to participate in a therapeutic plan lasting a minimum of eight months and in a cycle of at least 16 public meetings, to be held in Italy, over a period of eight months, at amateur passy sports associations, federal territorial centres, for recovery from gambling addiction, and in any case according to the indications and program proposed by the FIGC passy
“The Federal Prosecutor’s Office will ensure compliance with what is indicated and, in case of violations, will adopt the measures within its competence, pursuant to the CGS, with termination of the agreement and continuation of the disciplinary proceedings before the passy sports justice adjudicating bodies passy
”Earlier FIGC president Gabriele Gravina had told reporters in Rome: “The rules call for a certain number of years of suspension, but the plea bargain and extenuating circumstances have been taken into consideration and the players’ collaboration went above and beyond, therefore we must continue to respect the rules we have established for ourselves passy
”Tonali was one of several players named in the FIGC’s investigation, which also saw Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli banned for seven months passy
The suspension will mean he will not play again for Newcastle this season and will miss Italy’s Euro 2024 finals campaign should they qualify passy
