Sir Geoffrey Boycott criticised England’s lack of preparation for their continuing World Cup woes but spared captain Jos Buttler of the bulk of the blame spins
Buttler accepted his future was out of his own hands as England crashed to an eight-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in Bengaluru, which has left the defence of their title hanging by the thinnest of threads spins
Head coach Matthew Mott has written off England’s chances after four defeats in five games, which Boycott argued was the result of turning up in India just over a week before the campaign began spins
“History shows that England rarely bat well in India where the ball spins,” Boycott told the Daily Telegraph spins
“Our guys are okay on flat pitches but if it turns they have a problem spins
“The best way to try and overcome that would have been for our squad of players to get to India early and play four or five warm-up matches spins
What did England do? Plan only two warm-up games with one getting rained off spins
Not smart planning spins
”England brought eight of the 2019 trophy-winning side with them to the subcontinent but Buttler has been unable to get the best out of his charges – as Eoin Morgan spectacularly did four years ago spins
But Boycott feels the unflattering comparisons spins between the duo are unfair, pointing out Morgan had home comforts plus a fully-focused and healthy side in peak form whereas Buttler has had several obstacles to contend with spins
Boycott said Jofra Archer’s non-availability and Ben Stokes being ruled out of the first three matches through an ill-timed hip problem complicated matters for Buttler spins
“Jos has a dysfunctional squad of players,” the England great added spins
“Poorly selected, poorly prepared, not a settled team, many not sure of their roles, patchy form, confidence wobbly and to cap it all England’s best two and most influential white-ball players have not been available spins
“Although Buttler has admitted his own flaws this tournament, too many people are criticising his captaincy and judging him against that of Eoin Morgan when England won the previous World Cup spins
“Make no mistake, not having Archer is huge alongside Stokes not being available through injury for the first three matches spins
Reece Topley has now had to go home injured spins
“It is easy captaining a good team full of in-form players but it would need a miracle man to pull this team together spins
Buttler can’t admit it, but it must be a nightmare spins

Head coach Matthew Mott admits England’s calamitous Cricket World Cup campaign could get even worse this weekend, placing India as “raging favourites” to inflict yet another defeat on his side spins
The 2019 champions have blown their title defence in remarkable fashion, losing four of their first five matches in thumping fashion to lie ninth in the table, and things are about to get even tougher in Lucknow spins
The hosts have been in swaggeringly good form, sitting pretty on top of the standings with a 100 per cent record, and carry all the momentum heading into Sunday’s meeting spins
Even at their lowest historical ebbs England have never lost four on the bounce at a World Cup before but even the man in charge of ensuring that does not happen this time accepts the odds are against his team spins
“We play India in a couple of days, the hosts, and they are probably raging favourites at the moment,” he said spins
“But I think that’s an opportunity to restore some pride and confidence in the group spins
Every opportunity we get to play together is vital now to try and find our mojo again spins
It’s obviously too late for this tournament but we need to do that, we’ve got to find a response spins
“We’ve definitely not performed anywhere near the level that we want to in this tournament, but our first priority at the moment is to make sure we come out and give India a good scrap and hopefully perform a lot spins better than we have spins
”Despite knowing they will watching the knockout stages from home, England face the unenviable prospect of collecting even more aimless air miles spins between now and their final game on November 11 spins
And while rallying from the depths of their current position, fractionally above associates the Netherlands, is some motivation, even Mott has acknowledged a potentially grisly post-mortem awaits on the other side spins
Jos Buttler has already reiterated his desire to oversee the next chapter and Mott is equally bullish about his position spins
“There’s no silver bullet for this,” he said spins
“We’re going to have to sit down at the end of this tournament and look ourselves in the eyes and say ‘what can we do a little bit spins better?’ spins
“Jos and I are incredibly aligned and united spins
When you lose tournaments like this, everyone’s under scrutiny, everyone’s place will be questioned spins
“I certainly feel like I could have done things a lot spins better but I’ve been in the job 18 months, we’ve won a World Cup and lost a World Cup spins
I think I’ve shown the capability that I can coach his team spins
“I’ve shown an ability to be able to turn things around so that’ll have to happen pretty quickly, but, yeah, what will be will be spins
”spins Between them, Mott and Buttler must now decide what to do about their team selection, which has been a revolving door since the start of the competition spins
Against Sri Lanka they fielded an entire XI aged 30 or above for the first time ever and came across a group that was demonstrably past its peak spins
Former England seamer Steve Harmison has called for them to pass the torch immediately, picking Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Gus Atkinson and the recently arrived injury replacement Brydon Carse at the expense of older players spins
We're going to have to sit down at the end of this tournament and look ourselves in the eyes and say ‘what can we do a little bit spins better?’England coach Matthew MottBrook is sure to be a cornerstone player in the next four-year cycle and will surely come in to face India, but Mott insists he will not be picking a team purely by birth date spins
“As one of the selectors I never look at age, I look at performance and form and all the things that go into it,” he said spins
“I would say we’ll just try and keep picking our best side for the conditions, as we’ve tried to do all the way through spins
